Nursing students completed hundreds of hours of community service

Nursing students in an Introduction to Professional Nursing course completed 444 hours of community service in spring 2006. The students were assigned to complete eight volunteer service or community engagement hours in order to learn the scholarship of professional engagement in the community. The community engagement experience also was used as a platform to talk about the diversity of people in Evansville and to reflect on personal and professional values. Jessica MacLeod, instructor in nursing, said, “Many students chose to continue their community service, and have to date completed well over the eight hours required for the class.” Students volunteered at multiple sites, including the Tri-State Food Bank, Albion Fellows Bacon Center, Evansville Christian Life Center, Evansville Boys and Girls Club, American Red Cross, Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE), Potter’s Wheel, St. Vincent de Paul, Vanderburgh County Detention Center, and several nursing homes. “I am so proud of this class and the service that they provided to our community,” MacLeod said. |
