USI's Starbucks to open soon
|
On the morning of Monday, August 14, visitors to the new David L. Rice Library will be greeted by the smell of dark roasted coffee and fresh ground espresso. A full-service Starbucks, much anticipated by coffee fiends on campus, will have its “soft opening” from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, according to Kim Racine, retail manager for Food Services. USI’s Starbucks will offer all the coffee drinks available at other franchises; soups, sandwiches, and pastries; unique bottled beverages; and Starbucks merchandise. A lounge on the north end of the library offers additional Starbucks seating. Students will be able to use the Munch Money and Dining Dollars on their Eagle Access cards at the café. Food Services staff will prepare sandwiches and other food items in a kitchen on the library’s lower level, immediately beneath the café. An elevator just outside the Starbucks entrance serves both. Starbucks will offer “totally different recipes” from other selections on campus, Racine said, and must approve any product before it is sold. “They want everything to be the best quality product. “It’s a good relationship. They are very structured and controlled. They want Starbucks to be a ‘third place’ - You have your home, work, and the third place: your home away from home.” The lunch items will not be available until the café’s “official” opening on the first day of classes, Monday, August 28. The café will employ roughly eight full-time and six part-time employees. Racine said she has received inquiries about employment from many students, who make up half of the café’s part-time employees. Regular hours begin Sunday, August 27, and will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday; closed Saturday; and 4 to 11 p.m. Sunday. Until then, the café will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Becky Robb, formerly manager of Sub Connection, will manage Starbucks. |
