Eykamp String Quartet to perform in Rice Library
|
The Eykamp String Quartet will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 12, in Rice Library’s Grand Reading Room. The performance is part of the University Core Curriculum Speaker Series and is sponsored by the Core and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Last month, the Speaker Series brought the Eroica Trio to USI. “After the success of the Eroica Trio educational performance, we are pleased to offer more music as part of the Core Speaker Series,” said Dr. Mark Krahling, director of the University Core Curriculum. “The Philharmonic has been very cooperative in our efforts to bring music to USI.” Members of the Eykamp String Quartet - John Macfarlane, violin; Dawn Posey Ginter, violin; Christopher McKay, viola; and David Beem, cello - serve as principal string players of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and as artists in residence for the University of Evansville’s music department. Macfarlane is concertmaster of the Evansville Philharmonic. His past engagements include concertmaster and soloist with Colorado's National Repertory Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival. He most recently played in the IRIS Chamber Orchestra. In 2003, he was a featured guest artist at the Garth Newel Chamber Music Center in Virginia and a soloist at the Galena Music Festival in Illinois. Macfarlane has been involved extensively with new music and participated in contemporary music ensembles at Northwestern University and the University of Maryland. He also is the concertmaster of the Owensboro Symphony in Owensboro, Kentucky. Ginter is associate concertmaster of the Evansville Philharmonic. She has performed extensively with various chamber ensembles in the U.S. and abroad, including the Boston Conservatory Honors Quartet, Festival A Tempo in Caracas, Venezuela, the Chamber Music Festival of Amman, Jordan, and the Blossom Music Festival. In addition, she has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Missouri, Indiana, and Europe. McKay is principal violist with the Evansville Philharmonic. He received his B.M. from Louisiana State University and his M.M. from Indiana University. He has served as principal viola with the Baton Rouge Symphony orchestra, fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, a member of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and guest principal viola at the IU Summer Music Festival for the past three summers. Beem is principal cellist in the Evansville Philharmonic. His performances have taken him across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and South Korea. He was a finalist in the 1998 Naumburg String Quartet Competition, first prize-winner of the 1998 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and has performed string quartet literature to critical acclaim at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall and Weill Recital Hall in New York City. “The Rice Library Grand Reading Room should be a great space for classical music,” Krahling said. “Dan Craig, music director at USI, praised the acoustics of the reading room during the Rice Library grand opening. We hope to take advantage of that for this performance.” The public is invited to attend. There is no admission charge and no reservations are needed. For more information, contact Krahling at 812/464-1712. A reception will follow the performance. |
