National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week activities planned
|
USI students can take the electronic Check-Up to Go (e-CHUG), a confidential online survey about personal alcohol consumption use, during the week of October 16-20 as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week at USI. Computers will be set up in the University Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday for students to take the survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete. The e-CHUG survey was developed at San Diego State University and University of Texas and is used by over 300 colleges and universities across the United States. The program is designed to stimulate thoughtful internal reflection and personal motivation in students and reduce destructive drinking and drug use on college campuses. The information provided is confidential; the e-CHUG asks no questions through which students could be personally identified. Other National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week events include: Wednesday: The Minneapolis-based group GTC Dramatic Dialogues will present “The Sex and Drugs Show” at 9 p.m. in Carter Hall in the University Center. The group calls its presentations “Intervention Theatre.” “The Sex and Drugs Show” covers the basics of substance abuse and sexual communication/sexual assault. Behaviors discussed include types of drinking behavior, the effect of substance abuse on academic performance, what happens when alcohol and sexual communication collide, as well as the difficult subject of date rape. Thursday: The Counseling Center will offer alcohol screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in University Center Rooms 201-202. All students are invited to take the screening, which consists of a five-minute written self-assessment followed by a confidential meeting with a Counseling Center professional. For more information contact Brooke Orth, staff counselor, at 812/464-1867. Non-alcoholic cocktails will be served for “Thirsty Thursday,” with karaoke starting at 7:30 p.m. in University Center Room 206. There also will be a showing of the film “The DaVinci Code” at 9 p.m. in Forum I in the Wright Administration Building. Friday: From noon to 2 p.m., students can try on goggles that simulate the experience of being under the influence and attempt a variety of tasks. Fortune cookies and soft drink cans with alcohol information attached will be distributed at various times during the week. USI groups helping with the activities are Student Government Association, Student Housing Association, Activities Programming Board, Recreation and Fitness Center, Residence Life, Dean of Students, Counseling Center, Radio AM820, Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, BSW Club, Biology Club, and Health Services Organization. |
