Students can nominate faculty for teaching awards
|
Between today and Monday, November 6 students at USI can nominate a new faculty member and/or a part-time faculty member for two new teaching awards being introduced this year, funded by the USI Foundation. New faculty members with six years or less full-time teaching experience and part-time faculty members who are currently teaching and have taught at USI for a minimum of three consecutive semesters or one semester each of the three past years are eligible for nomination. The new faculty award winner will receive a $1,000 cash stipend and a faculty development grant of $1,000. The adjunct faculty award winner will receive a $500 cash stipend and a faculty development grant of $500. Nominations can come from any USI student not currently enrolled in the nominee’s class. USI alumni, faculty, and administrators can also nominate people for the awards. No self nominations are permitted. Nominations are due the first Monday in November in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the Wright Administration Building. David Bower, director of Development and president of the USI Foundation, said, “The USI Foundation believes strongly in the University's core values of being a teaching institution. In the academic world adjunct professors and professors in the classroom fewer than six years may not have an opportunity to be recognized for their hard work and teaching excellence. The Board of Directors of the USI Foundation thinks it is imperative that these teachers be affirmed and applauded. The teaching award is one way to do this.” Nominations should include the name of the nominee, the award for which she or he is being considered, and reasons the nominator believes the nominee deserves recognition for outstanding teaching. Lengthy nominations will not be considered for either category. Alumni and current students should include the names of the courses they took from the nominee. Faculty and administrators can list specific courses in which they have observed the nominee’s teaching. All nominations will require the name of the nominator and contact information (phone or email). All entries should be typed; handwritten applications not accepted. Visit www.usi.edu/acaffrs and click on Faculty Awards on the left menu for an application and information. Nominations will be reviewed by committee members from the Faculty Awards for Service, Teaching, and Research Committee of the Faculty Senate. Recommendations will be sent to the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. The winners will be announced during the spring faculty and administrative staff meeting held in January of each year. |
