USI Foundation to recognize outstanding teaching by new and part-time faculty
|
Nominations are being sought for two teaching awards being introduced this year at USI, funded by the USI Foundation. The monetary awards will recognize a new faculty member with up to six years full-time teaching experience and a part-time faculty member who is currently teaching and has taught at USI for a minimum of three consecutive semesters or one semester each of the three past years. The teaching awards will be bestowed annually. The new faculty award winner will receive a $1,000 cash stipend and a faculty development grant of $1,000. The adjunct faculty award winner will receive a $500 cash stipend and a faculty development grant of $500. David Bower, director of Development and president of the USI Foundation, said, “The USI Foundation believes strongly in the University's core values of being a teaching institution. In the academic world adjunct professors and professors in the classroom fewer than six years may not have an opportunity to be recognized for their hard work and teaching excellence. The Board of Directors of the USI Foundation thinks it is imperative that these teachers be affirmed and applauded. The teaching award is one way to do this.” Nominations can come from any USI faculty member, alumnus, administrator, or student not currently enrolled in the nominee’s class. No self nominations are permitted. The nomination deadline will be the first Monday in November; this year, the deadline falls on November 6. Nominations are to be submitted by mail or dropped off at the Office of Academic Affairs, a form is available online. Entries should be typed; handwritten applications will not be accepted. Nominations should include the name of the nominee, the award for which she or he is being considered, and the reasons the nominee deserves recognition for outstanding teaching. Lengthy nominations will not be considered for either category. Alumni and current students should include the titles of the courses taken that were taught by the nominee. Faculty and administrators can list specific courses in which they have observed the nominee’s teaching. All nominations will require the name of the nominator and contact information (phone or email). Nominations will be reviewed by committee members from the Faculty Awards for Service, Teaching, and Research Committee of the Faculty Senate. Recommendations will be sent to the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. The winners will be announced during the spring faculty and administrative staff meeting held in January of each year. |
