V-Day production raises money for victims of domestic abuse
|
Charging only $1 admission, the USI Philosophy Club raised over $200 for the Albion Fellows Bacon Center with its February 14 production of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.” “The Vagina Monologues” is an Obie Award-winning play featuring Ensler’s transcripts of interviews with actual women transformed into theatrical monologues. The V-Day movement spawned by the play is aimed at ending violence toward women. Albion Fellows Bacon center provides support for victims of domestic abuse. The cast was made up of students and faculty, including Natalle Hatfield, Elli Rinks, Jessica Jones, Misty Gillespie, Diann Garrett, Amber J Tepe, Heather James, Dr. M.T. Hallock Morris, assistant professor of political science, Brittney Scott, Andy Arthur, Dr. Mary Lyn Stoll, assistant professor of philosophy, Leah Barr, and Liz Dunigan. Jones, a double major in philosophy and social science secondary education and president of the Philosophy Club, said that Stoll had participated in V-Day performances at other schools, and suggested the club mount a production at USI. “We thought the Philosophy Club would be a great vehicle to do something like this at USI, since it’s never been done, and a great opportunity for students and faculty as well,” Jones said. The women performed to a full house of faculty, staff, and students in the lower level auditorium in Rice Library (Room 0017). They had rehearsed since early January. “I was so happy and proud of everyone involved with putting the production on. Everyone worked so hard for the past month and a half,” Jones said. The club is still accepting donations for the center. If you would like to contribute, contact Dr. Maurice Hamington, faculty advisor for the club, at 812/464-1722. The Philosophy Club plans a showing of the documentary, “Who Killed the Electric Car?” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in Rice Library Room 0017. |
