Stegemoller remembered for love of mathematics, passion
for sports
C. William "Bill" Stegemoller, associate professor emeritus of mathematics and championship-winning cross country coach, died at his home in Newburgh on March 5, 2007. He was in his sabbatical semester before entering retirement.Stegemoller joined the USI faculty in 1978 and as cross country coach won 11 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships and qualified for NCAA Division II national championships 11 times. His 1982 cross country team placed third nationally in the NCAA Division II competition. Stegemoller His awards include being named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, earning the Distinguished Service Award from the NCAA Division II Coaches Association and twice being named the Junior College Coach of the Year. In February, he was inducted into the inaugural class of the USI Screaming Eagles Athletic Hall of Fame, and he was one of six persons slated for induction into the 2007 Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame this spring. Services were held March 8, 2007, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
