Mountain climber, double amputee to share story
|
Warren Macdonald will tell his inspiring story of survival, will, and accomplishment at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in Carter Hall in the University Center. His lecture is free and open to the public. In April 1997, when Macdonald was 31 years old, he spent two days pinned under a one-ton boulder after a fall on Hinchinbrook Island in Northern Queensland, Australia. He survived, but both of his legs were amputated at mid-thigh. His doctor told him he’d never walk again, but, Macdonald said, “I don’t recall him saying anything about cycling, kayaking, or climbing mountains.” Ten months later he successfully made it to the summit of two mountains in Australia. His expeditions have taken him around the globe. In 2003 he became the first double above-knee amputee to reach the summit of Africa’s tallest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and more recently ascended America's tallest cliff face, El Capitan. Macdonald inspires audiences to believe in themselves, demonstrating that “nothing is impossible if we dare to face our fears and believe in ourselves.” His presentation reinforces the importance of recognizing change as an opportunity to transform our lives. He’s written a book about his story, “A Test of Will: One Man’s Extraordinary Story of Survival.” The USI Bookstore will be selling copies of the book at the event and in advance in the bookstore. Macdonald’s story has been featured in international magazines and newspapers, and he has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, National Geographic Television, and others. Oprah told him, “You are an inspiration to anybody who hears your story.” Activities Programming Board is the primary sponsor for the event. APB’s Jeff Ausenbaugh said, “This event is intended to draw students who wish to hear an amazing testimony of an individual who succeeded from near death despite all odds. His speech inspires those who desire to succeed and go beyond what they ever thought possible.” Co-sponsors for the event include Exercise Science/Physical Education Club, Social Work Club, Society of Automotive Engineers, USI Rugby, Eagles Wrestling, Recreation Fitness, and Wellness, and Student Development.
