Course evaluations go online
|
With a goal of improving teaching effectiveness, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment at the University of Southern Indiana is preparing course evaluations for the 2007 spring semester. For the first time, faculty members are able to choose between paper and online evaluations. Course evaluations allow students an opportunity to rate course effectiveness and teaching effectiveness. The online option will make the process simple and will not require classroom time. Michelle White, research assistant, said the student comments are of most help to instructors. She said, “Faculty members are interested in what students have to say about the course. We encourage students to complete the evaluations.” The online evaluation has 14 questions with a section for open comment. White said that it is important for students to write comments and even a few words or a sentence can provide faculty important feedback. If a faculty member opted for online evaluations, students can expect e-mails on or after April 16. Online evaluations will remain open until 8 a.m. on April 30. All students are encouraged to respond to the evaluation request. Online evaluations are password protected with randomly generated passwords. To protect anonymity, evaluations and passwords cannot be tied to students. If a faculty member opted for a paper form, evaluations will be handed out and completed in the classrooms. |
