USI junior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) needed only 95 pitches to shutout fifth-ranked Franklin Pierce College, 3-0, Monday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. The 13th-ranked Screaming Eagles go to 42-22 in 2007, while the Ravens finish the year 49-11.

Julian (8-3) ties the USI single-season record for wins with his eighth of the year. He is tied with eight other USI hurlers, including teammate Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana). Julian and Summers also are only the second pitching duo in USI history to win eight in the same year.

The junior left-hander scattered three hits and a walk over nine innings, while striking out eight Raven batters. He threw just 95 pitches.

In his last three starts, Julian is 3-0 with two shutouts and a 0.33 ERA over 27 innings of work. He has allowed just nine hits, one earned run, and struck out 21 batters in those starts.

The 42nd victory is a new USI single-season record and propels the Eagles into the 2:30 p.m. game on Tuesday. USI will play the loser of the game between 4th-ranked Columbus State University and 11th-ranked Angelo State University.

The Eagles started the scoring in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. USI junior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) and senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana).

USI increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) scored on single by sophomore designated hitter Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). Mastroianni, who increased his stolen base total to a nation-leading 61 with three thefts today, worked his way into scoring position on a walk, a stolen base, and a throwing error.
