Presidential Scholars for 2007-2008 announced

USI has announced the recipients of the Presidential Scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year. Ten Indiana high school students ranked first or second in their senior class at the end of the fall semester are selected for the competitive scholarships each year. The scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board for a full four years. Each scholarship is currently valued at approximately $47,360. The 2007-2008 recipients are Nick Earls of Bedford, Steven Geiss of Evansville, Jenna Gerlach of Washington, Koryn Heeke of Celestine, Jordan Heitman of New Palestine, Sunny Huang of Evansville, Emily Iannopollo of Lawrenceburg, Keri Larsen of Speedway, Lauren Raikes of Speedway, and Samantha Shirk of New Salisbury. Nick Earls is the recipient of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Presidential Scholarship. The son of Quince and Lisa Earls of Bedford, he is a graduate of Mitchell High School. He plans to major in chemistry or business. Steven Geiss is the recipient of the Edward F. Harrison Presidential Scholarship. He is the son of Joseph and Sandy Geiss of Evansville and a graduate of Reitz Memorial High School. He plans to major in biology/pre-medicine. Jenna Gerlach is the recipient of the Janet L. and Daniel M. Fuquay Endowed Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Chris and Pam Gerlach of Washington. She is a graduate of Washington High School and plans to major in biology/pre-physical therapy. Koryn Heeke is the recipient of the Louis and Anne G. Harpole Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Tom and Bernadette Heeke of Celestine. She graduated from Northeast Dubois High School and plans to major in communications/public relations. Jordan Heitman is the recipient of the Louis and Anne G. Harpole Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Linda Heitman of New Palestine. She is a graduate of New Palestine High School and plans to major in biology. Sunny Huang is the recipient of the Robert A. and Carole D. Rust Endowed Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Guoyuan and Shinan Huang and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School. She plans to major in pre-medicine/chemistry. Emily Iannopollo is the recipient of the Jennings D. and Ann Y. Carter Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Mary Iannopollo of Lawrenceburg. She is a graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and plans to major in psychology. Keri Larsen is the recipient of the Aline Nunn Renner Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Cynthia and Scott Larsen of Speedway and a graduate of Speedway High School. She plans to major in elementary education/special education. Lauren Raikes is the recipient of the James J. and Sally H. Giancola Endowed Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Gary L. and Lori S. Raikes of Speedway and graduated from Speedway High School. She plans to major in biology/pre-medicine and Spanish. Samantha Shirk is the recipient of the Robert M. Kent Family Endowed Presidential Scholarship. She is the daughter of Karen Milligan of New Salisbury and Gregg Shirk of Louisville, Kentucky. She is a graduate of North Harrison High School and plans to major in biology and pre-medicine. A Presidential Scholar must maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to remain eligible for the scholarship. The Presidential Scholar must also maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) for 62 credit hours attempted, at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA for the remaining credit hours. Freshman applicants who meet the academic qualifications to compete for the Presidential Scholarship will receive an application form in their acceptance packet. The application deadline for 2008-2009 Presidential Scholarships is February 1, 2008. The Presidential Scholarship program began in 1988 to attract outstanding Indiana students to USI. Scholarships are funded through private gifts to the USI Foundation. |
