Children enrolled in USI's Super Summer class, “Where the River Grins: Evansville’s Story,” will time-travel, sail on the Ohio, and meet figures from Evansville history.

The class, for children entering grades 3-5, will be held during Super Summer Session 2, July 16-20 at Evansville Day School.

Instructor Angie Karcher said, “The kids will get into a time machine every morning, after a brief teaser about where we’re going, and each day they’ll be in a different time.” An elementary school teacher, Karcher based the class on a children’s book she authored.

Because river transportation was key to Evansville history, each day’s lesson will include a different vessel appropriate to the time period, including a ferry boat, canal boat, slave ship, rescue boat (for a lesson about the 1937 flood), and the LST. Actors will portray historical figures such as Evansville founder Colonel Hugh McGary, John Augustus Reitz, Albion Fellows Bacon, and Abraham Lincoln.

After they’ve learned about the city’s history, students will illustrate their visions of Evansville 200 years from now for an art contest to be judged by the Mayor’s Office.

At the end of the week, parents will have the opportunity to test their knowledge against students in a game show-style competition about Evansville history.

All Super Summer Session 2 classes will be held at Evansville Day School. Morning classes are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and afternoon classes from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Free lunchtime supervision will be available for those enrolling in both morning and afternoon classes. Children staying for lunch must be 5 years or older and should bring their own nonperishable lunches and drinks.

The registration fee is $90 for each class. Deduct $5 when registering the same child in both morning and afternoon courses or when registering two or more children at the same time.
