2007-08 Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Scholarships announced
The B/MD Scholarship is awarded annually to six exceptional students who are residents of Indiana; entering in the fall as USI freshmen; scoring at least a combined score of 1800 (including writing) or 1200 (excluding writing) from one test date on the SAT or 27 composite score on the ACT; and earning a high school GPA of at least 3.5.
The scholarship offers full tuition waiver and a provisional seat in the Indiana University School of Medicine. The B/MD Scholarship program is sponsored jointly by USI and the Evansville Center for Medical Education, Indiana University School of Medicine, located on the USI campus.
The 2007-08 B/MD Scholars are:
Henry and Hazel Bennighof B/MD Scholarship
Ashish Arshanapalli, the son of Bala and Vidya Arshanapalli of Crown Point (Lake County). Ashish graduated first in his class from Merrillville High School, where he served as vice president of his class for three years; played varsity tennis all four years; was a member of National Honor Society; and served as production assistant for the student-operated television station. He was recognized for his leadership skills and represented the school as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar Ambassador. His sister Priyanka is a 2005-06 B/MD Scholar.
Dr. William C. H. Grimm, Jr. and Phyllis R. Grimm Endowed B/MD Scholarship
Sonali Gandhi, the daughter of Arvind and Jayshree Gandhi of Schererville (Lake County). Sonali graduated from Morgan Park Academy in Chicago. She was lead editor and business manager for the literary magazine; business manager for the yearbook; and a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and Model United Nations, among others. She captained the varsity tennis team and played varsity tennis and soccer all four years. She earned academic and athletic accolades, as well as a perfect score in the Illinois High School Association piano competition. Her sister Sheiphali is a 2004-05 B/MD Scholar.
Edward F. Harrison B/MD Scholarship
Kyle Kopatich, the son of Janice and Tom Kopatich of Mount Vernon. Kyle excelled academically and athletically at Mount Vernon High School. He was captain of the football and basketball teams as well as an honor roll student who served on the National Honor Society, Student Athletic Council, Leadership Conference, and other student organizations. He lettered in football and basketball, received the Newcomer Basketball Award and was nominated as WEHT Channel 25’s Football MVP.
Edward F. Harrison B/MD Scholarship
Julie Loza, the daughter of Mary and Jerald Loza of Kouts (Porter County). Julie was salutatorian at Kouts High School. She created a device that measures glucose levels with a laser beam and won the Kouts High Science Fair and the Regional Science Fair President’s Award, and she participated in the International Science Fair. She played varsity volleyball for four years and was runner-up for the Cosmogirl Magazine “Cosmogirl of the Year” scholarship.
Victor V. Schriefer, Jr. Endowed B/MD Scholarship
Steven Miller, the son of Thomas and Laurie Miller of Boonville. A Castle High School graduate, Steven was a member of student council, National Honor Society, French Club, marching and concert band, and the track and field team. He won the Scholastic “C” Award at Castle and his team took first place in French at the USI Modern and Classical Languages Academic Bowl.
Delores and Charles Browning and Jennifer and Mark Browning B/MD Scholarship
Andrew Walker, the son of Holly and Tom Stratman of Evansville and the late Dennis Walker. Andrew graduated magna cum laude from Mater Dei High School, where he was active in student government; captain of the science and math academic bowl teams; co-captain of the cross country team; and received the Academic All-City and St. Maria Goretti awards.
