Mayor Weinzapfel to paddle "War Canoe" during Wabash Heritage Paddlefest

Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, along with friends and family, will paddle the Indiana War Canoe in a race against an Illinois War Canoe during the third annual Wabash Heritage Paddlefest on Saturday, August 18. There are still a few canoes available for those interested in participating in Paddlefest. Register at the Atheneum in New Harmony tomorrow morning between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Registration is $20 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under. Canoe rental is $25. Media: Please be at Grayville around 9:30 a.m. for launch photos or at New Harmony at 11:30 a.m. for the arrival of the War Canoes. Hundreds of canoe and kayak enthusiasts have participated since the inaugural Paddlefest in 2005. The event includes a 9.7 mile canoe float beginning in Grayville, Illinois, and ending in New Harmony, with special events for the entire family. Transportation from New Harmony to Grayville is included in the registration fee. Participants are welcome to use their own canoes or kayaks and additional canoes are available for rent. Quick-start classes will be available for novices. In addition to the river trip, there’ll be breakfast available from 7 to 10 a.m. and quick-start canoe classes in Grayville, and lots of food and fun activities in New Harmony throughout the day. Wabash Heritage Paddlefest is presented by Historic New Harmony with sponsors and partners Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, Canoe Evansville, the Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau, Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission, Warrick County, the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation, the Allen Gray Cemetery Trust, Grayville, Illinois, and University of Southern Indiana Extended Services.
