Photo collection from ‘37 flood on display at Rice Library
|
A year after the grand opening of the new Rice Library, a collection of photos from the 1937 Ohio River Flood is again on display. The permanent exhibit, hung in recent weeks, can be viewed just outside the University Archives and Special Collections offices on the library’s third floor. Martha Neimeier, associate director and collection development librarian, said, “Some people may remember seeing them in the lower level of the old Rice Library. There was a lot of interest in them. People were fascinated by them. We wanted to put them back up and let people be fascinated by them again.” Most of the 48 photos are from the University’s Tom Mueller Collection; others were independent gifts. “Most are of Evansville sites, but a few are from Mount Vernon and surrounding communities,” Neimeier said. The collection was assembled for the 50th anniversary of the flood in 1987. Photo provided Laura Pinhey ‘90, visiting the new library for the first time, was so impressed with the exhibit that she said she would return with family members, who relate the tale of her grandfather, 20 years old at the time, delivering groceries by canoe. |
