Millard-Mendez’s “large toys” on display
Rob Millard-Mendez, assistant professor of art, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, a city “with an incredible industrial past,” he says. “From an early age, I was enthralled with mechanics, motion, and the wonders born of fertile, no-nonsense Yankee minds.” An exhibition of his work, “Masks and Figures,” opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 25 at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. “Masks and Figures” is a mixed media installation that combines contemporary woodworking and design. Millard-Mendez’s sculptures are “large toys” which make humorous statements about human interactions. Although the work has an interactive, toy-like quality, Millard-Mendez infuses his creations with dark humor. Before moving to Evansville, Millard-Mendez taught at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including shows in Duxbury and Salem, Massachusetts; Goldsboro, North Carolina; Tallahassee, Florida; and Laredo, Texas. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and is a member of the College Art Association, International Sculpture Center, New England Sculptor’s Association, and American Craft Council. The reception will be held in conjunction with New Harmony’s Summer Art Stroll and is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through October 7. New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
