Art Center groundbreaking is September 5
The dream of an on-campus art gallery is closer to reality with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/ Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Art Galleries, to be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 5.The University community is invited to attend the ceremony on the west side of the Liberal Arts Center, and anyone is welcome to take a turn at the shovel after the initial groundbreaking. Refreshments will be served. In the event of rain the ceremony will be held on the second floor foyer of the Liberal Arts Center. Designed by architect Sarah Schuler of VPS Architecture, the 5,000 square foot addition to the Liberal Arts Center will be located on the ground level, with a view of Reflection Lake. Sarah Schuler is the daughter of Ken Schuler, a USI grounds maintenance worker. Exhibition areas with movable wall partitions will allow the galleries to be utilized as one large display area or a combination of two or three galleries. An entry gallery will serve as an additional display area and as a foyer for opening events. “It has long been the dream of the art faculty and all of those in the USI community who love the visual arts to have art galleries on our campus,” said Kathryn Waters, professor of art. “Our art program, excellent though it is, is truly incomplete without permanent campus display spaces to exhibit the work of students, faculty, and visiting artists, and to showcase the University’s growing art collection.” The construction of the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries is due in large part by the generous gift of Kenneth P. McCutchan. A portion of a $1.5 million gift of the artist Stephen S. and Palmina F. Pace is establishing the galleries. For more information, contact Special Events at 812/464-1930. |
