USI is inviting Southern Indiana residents to apply for the Connect with Southern Indiana program that helps participants become more aware of how they can put their skills to work in community and regional projects. Concepts learned at the Connect with Southern Indiana program bring innovative thinking to community projects, adding a jolt of critical thinking and the freshness of new ideas. From a nine-county area, 24 participants will be chosen for the 2008 program.

Connect Southern Indiana can add tangibles to the civic volunteer’s leadership mix. Topics for the 2008 sessions will cover community overviews, critical thinking, personality profiles, opportunity identification, project management, public skills, presentation planning, and government relations. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to meet others from the region with similar concerns and interests who help identify areas for collaborative problem solving. Programs will be facilitated by USI faculty and community leaders.

Sessions will be held January 10 and 11 (overnight required), February 1 and 22, March 14, April 4 and 25, May 16 and 30, and June 13. Collaborative projects developed during the program will be presented at the final session.

Grant funding from Lilly Endowment covers program expense such as overnight accommodates, meals, and materials for the participants. People in the program provide their transportation to and from sessions and volunteer time to attend sessions and work on projects.

Candidates should have the desire to develop regional leadership skills and become active in the region. They must be residents, for at least one year, of Knox, Gibson, Pike, Dubois, Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, or Perry counties. An online application form is available at the USI Web site, www.usi.edu/extserv/outreach/connect.asp. Applications are due Monday, October 8, 2007. Persons with questions about the program or the application should contact Dr. Darrel Bigham, USI professor of history, at 812/465-7014 or dbigham@usi.edu.

Applicants will be notified of the decision of the selection committee by November 12, 2007.
