Courier & Press editor is USI Media Day keynote

Evansville Courier & Press Editor Mizell Stewart III will be keynote speaker for the 16th annual High School Media Day at USI on Friday, November 9. The public is invited to attend the keynote speaker’s presentation, which will begin at 9 a.m. in Forum I. Media day, an event for high school journalists, also includes critiques, an awards luncheon, and a variety of workshops. After his keynote presentation, Stewart will present a diversity workshop titled “People Like Me.” Other workshop sessions include “Digital Audio Editing” (John Morris), “Digital Storytelling” (Dr. Chad Tew), “Digital Video Editing” (Dr. David Black) “Feature Writing: Because you’re a student and you’ve got other things to do: Writing a feature story in an hour or less” (Ryan Reynolds – Courier & Press), and “Journalism Ethics” (Dr. J. Wayne Rinks). Also offered will be “Advertising in Newspapers & Yearbooks” (Dr. Bob West), “Communication Careers” (Angie Ross - WKDQ), ”Fresh Ideas for a New Year” (John Wells – Reitz High School), “Interviewing Basics” (Jim Beck – Courier & Press), “Writing Newspaper Leads” (Lydia McCoy – Courier & Press), and 20-minute on-site Yearbook Critiques that advisers can sign up for on a first-come-first-served basis on the day of the workshop (Tracy Maurer – University of Evansville). There also will be tours of the USI campus. Stewart is a veteran journalist who has coordinated coverage of such high-profile news events as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the deadlocked 2000 presidential election. He joined the Courier & Press in June 2007. He moved to Evansville from the Akron Beacon Journal. Previously he was a consultant for the former Knight Ridder newspapers, for which he helped lead a team of journalists who coordinated coverage of Hurricane Katrina's aftermath at the Sun-Herald in Biloxi, Miss. The newspaper's coverage won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Originally from Cleveland, Stewart began his newspaper career in 1982 as a 16-year-old summer photography intern with Sun Newspapers. He has lectured at The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and in the Department of Journalism at Bowling Green State University. He has given presentations on leadership, management, reporting and diversity for the American Press Institute, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the National Writers Workshops, Investigative Reporters & Editors, the National Association of Black Journalists and the World Journalism Institute. He was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2001 and 2002. The University of Southern Indiana, the Scripps Howard Center for Media Studies, the Evansville Courier & Press and the Young Readers Services are co-sponsors of High School Media Day, involving hundreds of area high school students and their teachers.
