Twenty-three people – including a few from the USI community - have been selected for the third class of USI’s regionally-based Connect with Southern Indiana program. Funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment and sponsored by USI, the program is intended to boost Indiana’s retention of intellectual capital by helping participants strengthen their skills and opportunities for involvement in community and regional projects; meet business and civic leaders; and gain greater awareness of community and regional needs.

Charmaine McDowell, manager of marketing and program development for Extended Services, said the program helps participants network and learn more about the region.

“We try to line up educational locations to have the meetings so people can learn about regional assets. In the program, we measure their social networking skills through a pre- and post-assessment and see how well they interact with the group - the more they interact, the greater their contacts within the region.”

Members of Connect with Southern Indiana’s first class in 2006 are implementing a prisoner-to-community re-entry program in Spencer County. Other projects in development include Afternoons R.O.C.K., a program providing activities for youth ages 10-14 in Dubois County; “Bringing History to Life for Young People,” a regional clearinghouse for educational materials on the history of Southwestern Indiana; and from the 2007 class, a project tackling childhood obesity.
