Federal funding requests approved
|
Congress has approved federal funds of $350,000 to construct a perimeter roadway and improve safety for pedestrians and motor vehicles at the University of Southern Indiana and $750,000 for advanced manufacturing and engineering equipment. The funds were requested by USI. The roadway will reduce traffic in the center of the campus and improve traffic flow from State Highway 62 and University Parkway. The project will result in improved intersections, wider travel lanes, and pedestrian bridges and crosswalks to improve pedestrian and motorist safety. The lab equipment funding will be used to provide state-of-the-art engineering equipment in the new Business and Engineering Center scheduled for construction in 2008. “The advanced manufacturing and engineering laboratory equipment will allow the University to continue to produce a highly trained and technologically competent workforce for the region and the transportation system will enhance pedestrian and traffic safety on campus,” said USI President H. Ray Hoops. “We are very grateful for the work of Congressman Brad Ellsworth, Indiana senators Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh, and the congressional office of Baron Hill for their support of the funding,” Dr. Hoops added. The funding was included as part of the FY2008 Omnibus Appropriations measure that was approved by the House and Senate in mid-December. The President is expected to sign the bill into law. |
