Warhol's "Silver Clouds" exhibition continues through January
The exhibition "Silver Clouds" by Pop artist/icon Andy Warhol continues through January 31 at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. April Vasher-Dean, director, said, “We wanted to be able to host the Warhol exhibit for more than the usual six weeks in order to provide more time for the region to experience it.” The USI Senior Art Seminar, usually held in January, will open in mid-February. Vasher-Dean said, “This also gives the students more time to prepare. They won’t be rushed with finals and the holidays.” Warhol (1928-1987) is among the most notable and influential of 20th century artists. He worked in many mediums including printmaking, sculpture, painting, and filmmaking. Through his images of Campbell’s soup cans and celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, Warhol helped define the Pop Art movement - a movement characterized by elevating consumer and popular culture, often using disposable or reproducible media to help deflate what was commonly held to be “high art.” "Silver Clouds" is an installation of 40 Mylar helium balloons that float around New Harmony Gallery’s main exhibition space. The installation has been called dazzling, stunning and unreal by some, but others have found the experience to be calming, healing, and meditative. "Silver Clouds" interact with and touch viewers in a way few installations allow. New Harmony is the first Indiana venue for the exhibition which travels extensively throughout the world. "Silver Clouds" was last exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) at St. Louis University in 2006. The exhibition is made possible through support from USI and Mrs. Jane Blaffer Owen. The gallery also offers for sale Warhol-inspired gifts and Pop Art souvenirs. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 812/682-3156 before bringing a group of five or more. For more information go to www.nhgallery.com. |
