Academic Skills and University Division Advising present Success Series Workshops each semester. These 30-minute workshops are offered throughout the semester. The workshops are held from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in Education Center Room 1102 (the Writers’ Room). All workshops are free and open to students, faculty, and staff. No reservations are necessary.

The spring 2008 Success Series Workshops are:

Understanding the Core Curriculum. Every student has to complete the Core Curriculum in order to graduate from USI with a bachelor’s degree. If you don’t understand the University Core Curriculum or don’t know why you have to take courses that don’t count for your major, then this is the workshop for you. We’ll discuss why you need the Core Curriculum, what courses you need to take to complete the core, and core requirements specific to various majors. Offered January 23, February 5, March 27, and April 16.

Visual Organizers: Seeing is Believing! Explore how your mind organizes information. Learn new ways of organizing material for maximum recall and retention. Come and see a demonstration of different types of visual organizers and you too will become a believer. Offered January 24, February 11, March 19, and April 8

What is Your Test Taking IQ? Do you know all the best strategies for different types of exams? To be sure, come to this workshop with Drs. Johansen and Razor and find out. Offered January 29, February 12, March 17, and April 9.

Improving Your Time Management. Time management doesn’t mean you have to wear a clock around your neck like Flavor Flav. Come to this session and learn strategies to better your time management skills without the big clock. Offered January 31, February 20, March 18, and April 21.

Improve Your Reading Speed. The average college student will be required to read 2,500 pages of text every semester. Are your reading speed and comprehension skills strong enough to meet the demands of college reading? Attend this interactive workshop to assess your current reading speed, learn to break bad habits, and apply some new reading strategies to become an efficient and flexible reader. Offered February 6, February 19, February 28, and March 24.

Relax…..It’s Just Math. Are you taking a math class and math is not your thing? Could you use some tips that might help you to relax a little while in a math class? Do you have trouble doing well on a math test? Do you run out of time when taking a math test? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions or are looking for answers to other questions about math, come to this workshop. Offered February 7, February 25, April 1, and April 23.

The Termination of Procrastination. Do you put things off? Do you review your iTunes playlist rather than reviewing your lecture notes? When you have a test to study for, does your refrigerator suddenly need cleaning out? If you procrastinate, this session will give you techniques for prioritizing and completing your academic workload. Offered February 14, March 25, April 7, and April 17.

Making MAJOR and Career Decisions. Are you wondering why a choice of major and career direction has been a struggle for you? It is quite normal to be uncertain about your choice of a major and/or career direction at this time. College is a time of exploration and self-discovery. This session is designed to help you identify your own skills, interests, and abilities, explore the connection between majors and careers, and create an action plan that moves you forward in the major and career exploration process. Offered February 26 and March 26.
