Sponsored by USI, University of Evansville, Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library, and the Committee to Promote Respect in Schools (CYPRESS), the One World Film Series uses the power of film to illuminate diversity issues and create discussion. Each film will be shown on a Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday at three different locations: USI, UE and Central Library.

“Enemies of Happiness,” the winner of the international premiere award, is a powerful, remarkable, and inspiring film. From its stunning opening emerges a gripping story of opposition and women’s rights in today’s Afghanistan as the country tries to reconstruct life after the Taliban. At its heart, it’s a portrait of Malalai Joya on the campaign trail in the first democratic elections in Afghanistan in 30 years.

“Enemies of Happiness” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 17, in the Group Study Room at Central Library’ 7 p.m. Monday, February 18, in Smythe Lecture Hall in The Schroeder Family School of Business Administration at UE; and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center at USI.

“The Devil Came on Horseback” tells the story of genocide in Darfur through the eyes of Brian Steidle, a former U.S. Marine. Stark footage of decimated villages and smoldering remains make “The Devil Came on Horseback” a harrowing film to watch. Steidle’s reactions to the genocide are compressed into a compelling, beautifully photographed film that captures Sudan’s natural beauty as well as its turmoil.

“The Devil Came on Horseback” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Central Library’s Group Study Room; 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, in Smythe Lecture Hall in The Schroeder Family School of Business Administration at UE; and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center at USI.

“The Power of Good” is a documentary film that tells the story of one of the greatest humanitarians of our time. Nicholas Winton, together with his team (his mother, a secretary, and other concerned individuals) managed to save 669 endangered children, most of them Jewish, from almost certain death at the hands of the Nazis and Nazi collaborators.

“The Power of Good” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20 in the Group Study Room at Central Library; 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, in Smythe Lecture Hall in The Schroeder Family School of Business Administration at UE; and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center at USI.

All films are free and open to the public. A group discussion led by a facilitator will follow each film.

Heidi Gregori-Gahan, director of International Programs and Services, is the University representative for CYPRESS, an organization which strives to promote respect through diversity. For more information, contact International Programs and Services at 812/465-1248.
