USI Habitat for Humanity in Pennsylvania for Spring Break
|
The University of Southern Indiana chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be participating in the International Collegiate Challenge by making a trip to York, Pennsylvania over spring break to help build homes. The Collegiate Challenge is the national alternative break program that provides opportunities for students of all ages to develop leadership skills, meet new people, and help people in need. The USI group will be paired up with the local Habitat for Humanity in York to help build houses and do construction work to help the overall community. “I don’t know exactly what we will be doing, but we are excited to go. The trip is a great opportunity to get to know people within the group and outside the community as well; I’ve met great friends through these activities,” said Chapter President Julie Mehringer (Jasper). This will be Mehringer’s second trip with the group and her fourth year being a member of the USI chapter. The senior said the overall mission of Habitat is to aid in eliminating poverty in Evansville and internationally to the best of their ability. Earlier this month the group participated in a litter clean-up for Keep Evansville Beautiful and last semester the group helped build homes for tornado victims in the New Haven subdivision. The group also will be participating in the Relay for Life on March 29. The week of March 29-April 4 will be “Act! Speak! Build! Week” when the USI chapter will educate students on campus. They will be distributing information in a booth near the University Center and writing various statistics in chalk around campus.
