Dr. Henry Giroux to address third Multicultural Seminar
The USI Department of Teacher Education’s Multicultural Education Seminar has attracted notable speakers in the past two years, and this year’s program, to be held Saturday, April 19, is no exception.The opening address this year will be presented by Dr. Henry Giroux, Global Television Network Chair in Communication Studies at McMaster University. He will discuss “Education, Democracy, and the Crisis of Disposable Youth.” Giroux has written dozens of books and articles. His most recent books are Stormy Weather: Katrina and the Politics of Disposability and The University in Chains: Confronting the Military-Industrial-Academic Complex. Past speakers include Dr. James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me; Thomas Todd, former president of Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Chicago Chapter; and Dr. Michael Apple, author of Educating the “Right” Way: Markets, Standards, God, and Inequality. A student-only question and answer session with Giroux will be offered during the seminar. Dr. Paul Parkison, assistant professor of education, said, “This is a good opportunity for students to meet and talk with one of the most prolific writers and critical voices in education and popular culture today.” USI students who register before April 11 can attend the seminar for free. After April 11, registration is $35 for USI students. The theme for the third annual seminar is “Responsive Public Space – Room for Recognition.” The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Carter Hall. The registration fee is $50 until April 11 and $60 after. Non-USI students pay $25 until April 11; $35 after. The registration fee includes conference materials, refreshments, and lunch. Faculty from various disciplines will participate. Dr. Kevin Celuch, professor of marketing and Blair Chair of Business Science, will present “An Enlarged Vision for Business Education: Enhancing its Relevancy for Industry and Academe.” Dr. C. Christy Baker, associate professor of social work, will present “Poetry and Perspective: Poems of Diversity in College Settings,” along with Dr. Michelle Emery Blake, associate professor of sociology/social work at the University of Evansville. Dr. Anne Statham, visiting professor of sociology and director of Service Learning, will present “Strategies for Participatory Policy Making in Welfare Policy.” Parkison encourages community participation. “This seminar is about more than education, it’s how do we create discussions about youth issues, and the government’s role in providing social services and youth programs.” For more information, contact Parkison at 812/461-5416. |
