RopeWalk Writers Retreat receives NEA grant
The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced May 1 that USI’s RopeWalk Writers Retreat is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The NEA is awarding more than $77 million nationwide to national, state, and local arts organizations. Other organizations in Indiana receiving NEA grants are the Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana Symphony Society, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Young Audiences of Indiana, the New Harmony Project, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Tales & Scales. “These grants represent a significant investment by the federal government in the cultural life of our state, leveraging significant state, local, and private support,” said Lewis C. Ricci, IAC executive director. RopeWalk staff applied for the grant with help of M. Heather Dragoo, sponsored research specialist in the Sponsored Research Office. The grant will be used to help fund celebrations surrounding the 20th Annual RopeWalk Writers Retreat, to be held June 14-21 in New Harmony. In honor of the anniversary, RopeWalk Press will release Twenty Years in Utopia: The RopeWalk Writers Retreat Anthology. The anthology contains poems, short stories, and essays by writers who have participated as faculty for the conference over the years and will be available for purchase at the retreat this summer. This year’s conference offers additional workshops, a master class, a publishing symposium, an alumni reading, a concert by singer/songwriter David Broza, and a community-centered day of “random acts of poetry and guerrilla prose.” Faculty are Stephen Dobyns, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and Dave Smith, poetry; Lee Martin and Elizabeth Stuckey-French, fiction; and Susan Neville, creative nonfiction. Master classes will be led by Ingrid Nunez and Bob Schacochis. The public is welcome to attend free readings and craft lectures throughout the week.
