The Board of Trustees of the University of Southern Indiana at the regular board meeting on May 10, 2008 approved appointments to the Presidential Search and Screen committee. Appointments were made by the chair of the Board of Trustees, the Student Government Association (SGA), Staff Council, Faculty Senate, Alumni Council, and the USI Foundation. The search committee is charged with recommending to the trustees, no later than March 1, 2009, an unranked list of no more than five individuals who, in the committee’s judgment, are well qualified to lead the University of Southern Indiana as its next president. USI President H. Ray Hoops has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2009.

John Dunn, chair of the USI Board of Trustees, will chair the 19-member committee. Other trustees on the search committee are W. Harold Calloway, Jamie L. Johnson ’09, Jeffrey L. Knight, Amy MacDonell, and Ted C. Ziemer Jr.

Raul J. Ramirez ’09 is the full-time student on the committee, selected by the SGA, David O’Grady, library assistant, is the support staff member selected by the Staff Council, and Mohammed Khayum, dean of the College of Business, is the senior administrator selected by the chair of the Board of Trustees.

Faculty Senate chose five faculty members, one from each college. They are Peter S. Cashel-Cordo, Business; Charles L. Price, Education and Human Services; J. Wayne Rinks, Liberal Arts; Kathy V. Rodgers, Science and Engineering; and Mayola Rowser ’95 M ’99, Nursing and Health Professions. Linda L. Cleek ’82 is the Extended Services representative, recommended by the dean of Extended Services. Bix Branson is the USI Foundation Board of Directors appointee. Dunn also appointed Bruce H. Baker and Chris D. Melton ’72 as community representatives. Jessica A. McCarthy, ‘00 is the alumni representative.

The trustees further approved the leadership qualities for the next president to include academic leadership, ability to develop public and private resources for continued progress, and demonstrated experience in implementing new programs and in setting and achieving goals. The person needs to be a skilled manager, a visionary with a commitment to shared governance, and active in state, regional, and local activities, especially given the University’s commitment to regional responsiveness.

The trustees approved a resolution to authorize a long-term lease with the City of Evansville for construction of a water tower on a parcel of land 100’ x 100’ on Bluff Lane between the USI Foundation office and the Support Services building now under construction. The tower is a necessary improvement to the city’s west side water distribution infrastructure and is needed to address recurring water pressure and quality issues on the city’s west side. The water issues directly affects USI, especially residents of University housing.

In other business, the trustees moved to object to the consideration of the question, in reference to the resolution concerning same sex domestic partners. The vote for the objection to consider the question was supported and no further action was taken by the board on the resolution at this meeting.
