20th RopeWalk Writers Retreat offers free readings, craft lectures

Even if you’re not registered for the 20th annual RopeWalk Writers Retreat June 14-21, you can attend free craft lectures and readings by this year’s distinguished faculty: Stephen Dobyns, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and Dave Smith, poetry; Lee Martin and Elizabeth Stuckey-French, fiction; and Susan Neville, creative nonfiction. It was announced today that Stuckey-French, who is giving a reading at the retreat on Friday, June 20, won first place in the Narrative Magazine 2008 Love Story Contest for her story, “Interview with a Moron.” All free readings will be held in the Atheneum. The craft lectures and a literary roundtable will be held in the Barn Abbey. Here’s the schedule: Saturday, June 14 Reading by Sigrid Nunez and Bob Shacochis, 6 p.m. Reception to follow. Sunday, June 15 Reading by Brigit Pegeen Kelly, 6 p.m. Monday, June 16 Reading by Lee Martin, 7 p.m. Reception to follow. Tuesday, June 17 Dave Smith craft lecture, 9:30 a.m. Stephen Dobyns craft lecture, 10:30 a.m. Susan Neville craft lecture, 1:30 p.m. Reading by Dave Smith, 7 p.m. Reception to follow. The Posey County Board of Commissioners issued a state of emergency for Posey County on Thursday due to rising floodwater from the Wabash River. No flooding is anticipated in the facilities RopeWalk uses, but some parking lots and streets may be flooded or inaccessible for other reasons.
