Section of Bent Twig Lane closed; one-way becomes two-way road
|
A portion of Bent Twig Lane is closed and fenced off in both directions, and the one-way section of Clarke Lane/Bent Twig Lane from University Boulevard to University Center Service Drive (the pay lot) is a two-way road leading back to University Boulevard. This Phase 1A of the road construction project is straightening the curve in Bent Twig Lane and routing it beside Reflection Lake to make way for construction of the Business and Engineering Center. Look for two-way signs and flex post roadway dividers on the first 100 feet of Clarke Lane west of University Boulevard. The dividers separate the lanes and direct motorists turning right off University Boulevard into the right lane. A rumble strip helps slow motorists driving by the Children’s Center. On the south side of the construction site, Parking Lot J is open. But Fred Kalvelage, construction manager, warned that access to the Liberal Arts Center from Parking Lot J will be cut off by the fenced construction site. Click here for a map of the construction project and road closings, and here for a wider view. Speed indicator displays placed at strategic locations monitor and warn motorists. Security officers and off-duty Sheriff’s deputies will direct traffic at peak times. Stephen Woodall, director of Security, advises drivers to: • Be patient and considerate of their fellow motorists and pedestrians; • Allow ample time for arrival and departure from the campus; • Obey the posted speed limit and stop at the pedestrian crossings; • Obey and follow the traffic signage and officers directing traffic; • Be cognizant and aware of their surroundings, other vehicles, and pedestrians; • Recognize that the campus will have many visitors including contractors who are not familiar with the area. Security will enforce traffic regulations as usual. Infractions may bring a warning or a traffic citation that could carry a $50 fine. Phase 1A of the road construction project is tentatively scheduled to be complete by mid-October. Phase 1B will begin in spring 2009, when a roundabout will be constructed at the entrance to campus at Clarke Lane and University Boulevard, and Clarke Lane/Bent Twig will be upgraded with a change in the configuration of the entrances into Lots G and H. Clarke Lane/Bent Twig will eventually be a permanent two-way street, but it has not yet been determined if that will happen at the conclusion of Phase 1A or 1B.
