USI plays for Mayor’s Cup at Evansville on Tuesday
|
The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team kicks off a two-game exhibition schedule Tuesday when it travels across town to play the University of Evansville for the Mayor’s Cup at Black Beauty Field. Match time is 7 p.m. A limited number of tickets are on sale in the USI Department of Athletics. Tickets are $5 each. The preseason finishes with USI traveling to Sewanee University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, for a 7 p.m. exhibition game on August 22. USI is hoping a strong preseason will enable it to do the same thing it did in 2007 – double their win total from the previous year. The Eagles doubled their win total last year by producing on the offensive side of the field. USI scored 10 additional goals last fall, resulting in a 6-12-1 overall record, 3-10-0 in the GLVC. USI also was an additional 10 goals away from moving three 1-0 losses, a 2-0 set-back, and the 1-1 tie into the win column. To continue the upward trend, USI Head Coach Dan Hogan has 12 returning players and 10 newcomers to start the season. Hogan is entering his ninth season at the helm of the USI men's soccer program. Leading the Eagles' offensive burst last season was junior midfielder/forward Paul Hutchens and sophomore forward/midfielder Dan Dormeier. Hutchens is USI's second leading returning scorer with 10 points on four goals and two assist after posting just four points (one goal and two assists) during his first season. Dormeier was a point behind Hutchens with nine points (three goals and three assists). He also had two of USI's game-winning goals in 2008. USI's top returning scorer is sophomore midfielder Michael Simcock. Simcock had 11 points (two goals and a team-best seven assists) with two assists leading to game-winning goals. On the defensive side of the field, the Eagles return senior defender Tyree Robinson. Robinson, who was named third team All-GLVC in 2007, started all 19 games for the Eagles last season and had one goal. The Eagles open the 2008 regular season August 28 at Strassweg Field when they host Marian College. Ray Simmons Sports Information Rsimmons@usi.edu 812/465-1622 |
