New Student Convocation: A formal welcome to USI
Jean Blanton ’01 will welcome new students to the University as the keynote speaker for the 2008 New Student Convocation on Friday, August 29. Held during Welcome Week (August 28-September 3) the Convocation is the official induction of new students into the USI community. The event is held the Friday morning before fall classes begin and features a variety of inspiring speeches from faculty, staff, and students. Each year, the keynote address is given by a distinguished alumnus or alumna. Blanton is an associate with Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel & Shoulders, LLP. She graduated cum laude from USI and earned her law degree with Dean’s honors from the University of Cincinnati in 2004. She was the recipient of numerous scholarships throughout her undergraduate and law school matriculation, including the Rotary, Edith V. Boots, Conover, Tri Kappa, College of Law, and Gorman scholarships, and received the Ernest Karam Book Award for Advocacy from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Blanton is involved with USI and the local legal community. She serves as the president of the University of Southern Indiana Alumni Council and is a board member of the USI Foundation. She has served on the Evansville Bar Association Board of Directors and as the chair of the Young Lawyers Section. She volunteers her legal services for the Volunteer Lawyer Program. The New Student Convocation begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Physical Activities Center. All new students are expected to attend, and will receive a gold-plated bookmark featuring the USI seal.
