New Residence Life Community Center offers pizza delivery on campus
Student requests for a “living room atmosphere” have been fulfilled in USI’s Residence Life Community Center on Mahrenholz Road. The new facility for students who live in campus housing replaces the McDonald West Recreational Room and incorporates the Eagle Xpress convenience store formerly located on Clarke Lane.An open house and grand opening will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 9. The focal point of the community center is a 1,500 square foot lounge with comfortable furniture, tables and chairs; an imposing fireplace below a flat screen television wired for cable television; and direct entry to Eagle Xpress and Pete’s Arena Pizza. At 2,200 square feet, Eagle Xpress is almost double the size of the former facility and will offer additional lines of products for sale, including a generic brand for students seeking low cost items. Beginning September 2, the Residence Life Community Center will be staffed daily from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. Eagle Xpress is open from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. August 27-28 and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. August 29. After August 29, regular hours are 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The entire University community will benefit from Pete’s Arena, which will offer pizza delivery anywhere on campus. Rebecca Robb, retail manager with Food Services, said, “We will be offering monthly delivery and pick-up specials. September’s special is a free two liter beverage with pizza purchase.” Delivery will be offered starting September 2. More seating is available at umbrella tables on the front and back patios. A basketball court and sand volleyball court displaced by construction will be reinstalled along with landscaping in the coming weeks. A large covered area and three benches were incorporated into the structure along Mahrenholz to serve students waiting at Residence Life’s main USI Shuttle stop. There is wireless Internet access throughout the building, which also includes offices, a meeting room, and bathrooms. Phase II of the project will add a multipurpose room. Laurie Berry, director of Residence Life, said, “It is exciting to see this community building come on line. It was planned with feedback from students and is a great gathering place for our community members.” Residence Life sought input from student focus groups for the design of the building. A living room area was the most requested feature. Wendy Knipe Bredhold News and Information Services wkbredhold@usi.edu 812/461-5259 |
