Lectures to discuss archaeological dig in New Harmony
|
There will be a lecture to discuss and show what was found at the archaeological dig, in New Harmony, Thursday, September 25, at 7 p.m. at Thrall’s Opera House. The archaeological dig took place outside Community House No. 2 during the months of May and June. The lecture series is free and open to the public. Bill Wepler, historical archaeologist for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, who was one of the site directors at the archaeological dig site, will be the featured speaker. The lecture will provide an interpretation of the findings at Community House No. 2 and the work that has been completed. Some artifacts and samples found during the dig will be on display. These artifacts represent the total life of the building. Wepler will also answer any questions the public may have. Wepler will also discuss the archaeological dig from 2001 and 2004. He will also discuss the role that University of Southern Indiana students played during the dig. Photos of artifacts not at the lecture will be on display. There will be another archaeological lecture on November 20, presented by Dr. Michael Strezewski, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Southern Indiana, who was also an on-site director at the dig. On October 30, featured speaker Ritsert Rinsma, Owen Maclure scholar from le Havre, France will discuss current Owen/Maclure Community research. Thrall’s Opera House is located at 612 Church Street in New Harmony. Historic New Harmony is a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.
