USI senior on state committee
|
Jennifer Eckerle, Jasper, represented the University of Southern Indiana on a student interviewing committee to recommend a student member for the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI). Eckerle was one of five Indiana college students to serve on the committee, which met in Indianapolis in August. Staff in Student Affairs recommended her for the selection committee. The selection committee interviewed five students for the commission and presented their top choices in priority order to Governor Daniels. Students from Ball State University, IUPUI, Trine University, and Martin University served with Eckerle. Claudia Braman, executive director of SSACI, said the student member represents student interests on the commission. It is tradition that students interview candidates and suggest names to the governor. Eckerle called the committee work a great experience. She said, “Though we only met for a short time prior to the interviews, we worked together forming questions and voicing opinions and suggestions. I’m glad I did it.” A senior at USI, Eckerle is majoring in elementary education with a minor in special education. This will be her fourth year as a resident assistant in Residence Life. She earned the honor of “RA of the Year for 2007-08.” She also works in the Student Conduct Office and is on the executive committee of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society for education. Eckerle graduated from Jasper High School, and she is the daughter of Raymie and Rita Eckerle of Jasper. She will graduate from USI in May 2009. SSACI works to make college affordable with need-based student grants and to increase college preparation by giving grants to students graduating from high school with Core 40 and Academic Honors Diplomas and to 21st Century Scholars.
