Free workshops help students succeed

Academic Skills and University Division Advising are sponsoring the following Success Series Workshops in September. These interactive workshops will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Writers’ Room (Education Center Room 1102) and are free. Monday, September 15 Noteworthy Note taking One of the most important skills needed in college is the ability to take good notes. Learn techniques for effective listening, the three steps involved in taking notes, and several types of note-taking methods including the Cornell Method. Presented by Lori Saxby, reading specialist in Academic Skills. Tuesday, September 16 Where Does Time Fly? Are you interested in getting the most out of your day? Reaching your goals? Do you have trouble managing your emails, preparing for upcoming exams, and juggling multiple assignments? If your answer to even one of these questions is yes, then this short seminar is for you. Learn how to prioritize tasks, improve your concentration, and overcome procrastination, as well as some skills for dealing with distraction. Can’t remember where that meeting was supposed to be? If your booked-up schedule, pile of class handouts, and cluttered mess of notes leaves you feeling overwhelmed and out of control, attend this session to learn quick tips for improving your organizational skills so that you can take back control. Presented by Jennifer Blackstone, advisor in University Division Advising. Thursday, September 18 Improve Your Reading Speed The average college student will be required to read 2,500 pages of text every semester. Are your reading speed and comprehension skills strong enough to meet the demands of college reading? Attend this interactive workshop to assess your current reading speed, learn to break bad habits, and apply some new reading strategies to become an efficient and flexible reader. Presented by Jann Hickey, learning specialist in Academic Skills. Monday, September 22 Unleashing the Power Within Instead of getting the low down on your friends from Facebook, come and learn about the most important person of all times: YOU! You will receive information that will inspire you to learn effectively through gaining confidence in your abilities. It will be FIE (Fun, Informative and Engaging).
