Center for Economic Education receives Development Award
|
The University of Southern Indiana’s Center for Economic Education will receive the 2008 Peter V. Harrington Economic Development Award at the Indiana Council for Economic Education’s annual awards program in November. The award includes a plaque and $1,000 for the center that exhibits the most improvement in helping the ICEE gain resources to support center and ICEE programs. In announcing the award, Dr. Harlan R. Day, ICEE’s executive director, cited the work of Dr. Gregory P. Valentine, founding director of the center. Valentine raised funds for the new Econ Camp South, which trains high school teachers to improve economic literacy. “Greg's efforts were instrumental in raising support for Econ Camp South, with the possibility of more funding to come from other banks who attended a fundraising luncheon Greg set up,” Day said. The award is presented in honor of Peter V. Harrington, the executive director of the Indiana Council for Economic Education from 1971-1997. For more than 50 years, the ICEE has provided resources and training to the teachers and students of Indiana. Its mission is to prepare students to become active citizens and productive members of our economy by providing them with the ability to make sound economic decisions.
