Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium: “The Case for Pedophilia and White Supremacy.”
|
Dr. Todd Schroer, associate professor of sociology, will present the first fall 2008 College of Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, September 19, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Schroer will present “The Case for Pedophilia and White Supremacy.” Here’s the abstract: In order for any social movement to achieve its goals, a number of criteria must be met. One of the most crucial concerns the collective identity of its members and how they are perceived in the overall society. For some movement organizations, whose members are primarily seen as deviant, a bulk of their activity is trying to convince the public that they are respectable members of society. These efforts are prime examples of groups engaging in what Kitsuse (1980) described as “tertiary deviation,” in which deviants confront and reject a negative identity and try to transform it into a positive and more viable self-conception. Using data from interviews, movement literature, and websites, this presentation analyzes the “frame transformation” (Snow et. al. 1986) efforts made by members of the Pro-Pedophilia (Childlove) and White Racialist Movement, arguing that a typology of transformation frames used by “deviant” social movement actors can be created. The colloquium is a free lecture series featuring faculty research in the College of Liberal Arts. For more information, contact Dr. Wes Durham, coordinator, at 812/464-1739 or wdurham@usi.edu.
