Debate-A-Palooza set for Friday, September 26
The University of Southern Indiana’s Debate-A-Palooza event is set to go on Friday, September 26, as planned. The event is centered around the presidential debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. The public is invited to join students, faculty, and staff for live music and free food, and watch the historic debate on two jumbo screens on the USI Quad. "Taking our lead from the Commission on Presidential Debates, the Communication Club is moving ahead with our plans for Debate-A-Palooza," said Leigh Anne Howard, coordinator of the Communication Studies program. "If the debate is cancelled, we will continue with a pre-election voter education rally." Registration begins at 6 p.m., the band deafmegan will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and the debate starts at 8 p.m. The screens will be situated on either side of a stage in front of the Liberal Arts Center. Bring a picnic and chairs or blankets. The nonpartisan event is designed to inspire people to get involved in the democratic process. You will be encouraged to participate in discussion groups after the debate. USI received a cash award from Indiana Campus Compact's iVote initiative to help purchase Debate-A-Palooza water bottles as giveaways to encourage students to vote. The bottles will be stuffed with iVote voter education materials. If it rains, the event will be held in the Health Professions Center. Debate-A-Palooza is sponsored by the Communication Club and APB with support from Academic Affairs, the USI Bookstore, the RISC Grant Program, and the University Core Curriculum, as part of its UCC Speaker Series.
