Dr. Tamara Hunt to present next Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium
|
The next College of Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 17, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Dr. Tamara Hunt, chair of the Department of History, will present “Where There’s a Will: Businesswomen and Property in 18th Century London.” Here’s the abstract: Although many people assume that historically women played only minor roles in business and had little control over wealth, wills in early 18th century England portray a very different situation. Some women not only ran businesses and controlled substantial fortunes, they also tried to control how their wealth would be used by their heirs. Through a focus on women in the London publishing trades, this presentation shows that a number of these business women were savvy and authoritative individuals who had a firm grip on the family fortunes. The Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquium Series is a free lecture series. Light refreshments will be provided.
