Free workshops help you succeed

Academic Skills and University Division Advising are sponsoring the following Success Series Workshops in October, November, and December. These interactive workshops will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Writers’ Room (Education Center Room 1102) and are free and open to students and employees. No reservations are necessary. Wednesday, October 8 Tuesday, November 4 Noteworthy Note taking One of the most important skills needed in college is the ability to take good notes. Learn techniques for effective listening, the three steps involved in taking notes, and several types of note-taking methods including the Cornell Method. Presented by Lori Saxby, reading specialist, and Chris Wittmer-Moore, reading instructor in Academic Skills. Monday, October 13 Where Does Time Fly? Are you interested in getting the most out of your day? Reaching your goals? Do you have trouble managing your emails, preparing for upcoming exams, and juggling multiple assignments? If your answer to even one of these questions is yes, then this short seminar is for you. Learn how to prioritize tasks, improve your concentration, and overcome procrastination, as well as some skills for dealing with distraction. Wednesday, November 5 Monday, December 1 Improve Your Reading Speed The average college student will be required to read 2,500 pages of text every semester. Are your reading speed and comprehension skills strong enough to meet the demands of college reading? Attend this interactive workshop to assess your current reading speed, learn to break bad habits, and apply some new reading strategies to become an efficient and flexible reader. Wednesday, October 15 Wednesday, October 29 Thursday, November 20 Unleashing the Power Within Instead of getting the low down on your friends from Facebook, come and learn about the most important person of all times: YOU! You will receive information that will inspire you to learn effectively through gaining confidence in your abilities. It will be FIE (Fun, Informative and Engaging). Presented by Deanna Odney, writing specialist in Academic Skills, and Renee Rowland, advisor in University Division Advising. Tuesday, October 7 Monday, October 27 Wednesday, December 3 What is Your Test Taking IQ? Do you know all the best strategies for different types of exams? Ms. Cyd Fithian, Assistant Math Specialist, Academic Skills Thursday, October 9 Wednesday, October 22 What Not to Wear: The Learning Style Edition Could your study strategies use an update? If you’re still studying the way you did last semester, and it’s not working for you, it could be time for a change. If you know your learning strategies need some work but aren’t sure where to begin, then this is the workshop for you. In this workshop, you will find out what your learning style is and develop some ways to study according to your style. Presented by Amber Hughes, advisor in University Division Advising. Tuesday, October 14 Monday, October 20 Making MAJOR and Career Decisions Are you wondering why a choice of major and career direction has been a struggle for you? It is quite normal to be uncertain about your choice of a major and/or career direction at this time. College is a time of exploration and self-discovery. This session is designed to help you identify your own skills, interests, and abilities, explore the connection between majors and careers, and create an action plan that moves you forward in the major and career exploration process. Thursday, October 16 Monday, November 3 Get SMART With Your Goals If you don’t know what a goal is or how to reach one, then this workshop is for you! Tuesday, October 21 Thursday, November 13 Monday, November 17 Math Study Skills Do you want to get the most out of your math class? Would you like to maximize your performance on math tests? This workshop will provide tips that will help you do better in math. Tips will address note-taking, homework, test preparation and other topics relevant to math. Tuesday, October 28 Tuesday, December 9 Test Anxiety and Stress: Moving from Mania to Management Do you get a queasy, sweaty feeling before entering a testing location? Fear forgetting everything you have studied? Have trouble sleeping the night before a test? If so, come to this workshop to learn ideas and techniques for managing your worst academic fears. Wednesday, November 19 Tuesday, December 2 Academic Success through Healthy Living Stressed out because finals are coming up and you feel the only way to get through is to pull all-nighters? Well, there’s actually a better way of doing things. Learn about how you can live healthy through finals without feeling drained.
