Lecture about Owen and Maclure research in New Harmony
|
Ritsert Rinsma, author and historian from Le Havre, France, will discuss the early years (1825-1826) of Robert Owen and William Maclure's communal society in New Harmony on Thursday, October 30, at 7 p.m. at Thrall’s Opera House. The lecture is free and open to the public. Rinsma has been working on the topics of Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, William Maclure and New Harmony since 1996, with several visits, throughout the U.S., including New Harmony. Currently, he is a researcher at the University of Le Havre and teaches English and History in a business school in Le Havre and a secondary school in Bolbec (Normandy). Rinsma stated, “I fell in love with New Harmony the first day I saw it. For me, every visit to this town is like a trip back in time. I particularly appreciate all my good friends and colleagues there who make me feel like I'm at home. When I see a building, I don't see just bricks or logs but the story of the fulfillment of a utopian dream and the accomplishment of individual aims and desires.” The final lecture in the series will be presented by Dr. Michael Strezewski, USI assistant professor of anthropology, on November 20. Thrall’s Opera House is located at 612 Church Street in New Harmony. Historic New Harmony is a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.
