Students can explore majors at October 23 event
|
Undecided students can learn more about USI’s academic programs at the first annual Exploring Majors Fair, to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, October 23, in Carter Hall in the University Center. The event is sponsored by University Division Advising. Faculty from all five colleges and dozens of departments will be on hand to answer student questions about the majors and minors available at USI. The Exploring Majors Fair is one of University Division Advising's efforts to help students move into a major course of study, along with freshman seminar and career planning classes, peer counseling, and referrals to Career Counseling and Career Services and Placement. Both of those offices, plus the Office of the Registrar and Student Development Programs, will be represented at the fair. Brian Hinterscher, University Division advisor, said there are about 1,300 students in the University Division. “The Exploring Majors Fair will provide opportunities for students to explore the academic opportunities available when deciding which majors and/or minors to pursue, as well as students who have declared their majors but may be uncertain or have questions about their choices," he said. "The intent is to provide an opportunity for students to investigate various curricular and career options in one place at one time.” Hinterscher pointed out that the Exploring Majors Fair also benefits departments by providing an opportunity to showcase their programs to a wide variety of students. “We want our students to make personal contacts within the colleges so they can put a face with the departments,” he said.
