Fourth International Symposium will focus on “Cultural Towns”

The Fourth International Symposium will be held in New Harmony, November 12-14 with presentations and symposium events at the Barn Abbey, Thrall’s Opera House, the Atheneum/Visitors Center and the Rapp-Owen Granary. Sponsors of the event include the University of Southern Indiana, Historic New Harmony, the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation, the New Harmony Artist’s Guild, the American Planning Association, and the US/International Council on Monuments and Sites. The focus the presentations throughout the three days will be “Cultural Towns.” Some of the featured speakers include: • The keynote address given by Susan Witt, executive director for the E.F. Schumacher Society, who will speak about “Community Economics: As If People Mattered.” • John Connell, founder of the Yestermorrow Design/Build School will speak about “New Harmony: I can do it: you can do it.” • James Macaulay from Glasgow, Scotland will discuss the Robert Owen community’s identity. • James Kienle, president of the Institute for Preservation and Contemporary Design will moderate a panel session on Developing New Design Guidelines for World Heritage Cultural Towns. Panel participants will be Ian Begg, architect from Edinburgh, Scotland; Jeff Soule of the American Planning Association State; Ben Nicholson, New Harmony resident and professor of architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and Roger Clark, professor of architecture for North Carolina State University and author of “Precedents in Architecture.” New Harmony residents may attend the educational sessions and presentations free of charge. A conference registration fee of $350 per person will be charged to anyone who resides outside of New Harmony and wishes to attend the symposium. Registration fee does include all meals.
