Nursing educator conference focuses on innovative teaching strategies
Dr. Mona Newsome Wicks, professor and associate dean for research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing in Memphis, Tennessee, is the keynote speaker at the USI College of Nursing and Health Professions 13th Annual Nursing and Health Professions Educator Conference on Wednesday, October 22.The conference will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Carter Hall in the University Center and focuses on innovative teaching strategies for health professionals in academic and healthcare settings to provide the attendee with a variety of session options focusing on innovative instructional methodology and current issues in education. Wicks received her Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Memphis, her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Ph.D. from Wayne State University. She has served on the faculty at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing for 21 years. Wicks’s research interests include minority, family caregiver, and women’s health within the context of chronic illness and health promotion/risk reduction. She is author and co-author of five book chapters and 34 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She currently advises Ph.D. nursing program students and supervises the Office of Research and Grant Support staff. She has received institutional, regional, and national awards for her teaching and mentoring skills and was recently selected as a finalist for the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Leader Program. In her keynote, “Creating Opportunities for Collaboration in Inter-professional Education,” Wicks will provide a synthesis of the literature related to inter-professional education in terms of current realities and describe the importance of inter-professional education as a strategy to enhance health outcomes in complex health systems. Wicks also will examine barriers that impair inter-professional practice as well as review successful strategies and recommended actions to create inter-professional learning systems. The afternoon sessions will address a variety of issues from educators throughout the region.
