Econ Camp improves economic literacy
|
Area high school teachers attending Econ Camp will have the opportunity to listen to economics and political science experts from throughout the state, including professors from the University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville, Indiana State University, and Ball State University. There also will be a presentation by David Ballard of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis-Louisville Branch. A program of the University of Southern Indiana’s Center for Economic Education, it will be held October 21-22 at YMCA Camp Carson in Princeton, Indiana. Dr. Greg Valentine, director of the Center for Economic Education, said, “Econ Camp will give teachers current information regarding how to teach economics in their classroom using something other than a textbook. Topics included are those that are of interest to students and will make the ‘dismal science’ come alive.” The overall purpose of Econ Camp is to improve economic literacy in Indiana. There three primary goals of the program are to review and reinforce an understanding of economic concepts; share best teaching practices relating these concepts to current public policy issues; and promote economics as an important part of the curriculum in the high school. It is an integral part of Indiana’s contribution to the National Campaign for Economic Literacy, initiated by the National Council on Economic Education. Thanks to the generosity of the George and Frances Ball Foundation, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis-Louisville Branch, Old National Bank, and the Indiana Department of Education, all camp expenses (lodging, registration, and fees) are covered.
