USI hosts Mole Day Chemistry Celebration October 21
|
[See the Evansville Courier & Press coverage of Mole Day.] More than 100 area high school students will face off in a chemistry competition Tuesday, October 21, when USI's Department of Chemistry and the Indiana-Kentucky Border Section of the American Chemical Society host a Mole Day Chemistry Celebration on the University of Southern Indiana campus. Participants representing Wood Memorial High School, Princeton Community High School, Castle High School, Booneville High School and Signature School will compete on teams of three. The first- and second-place teams will receive awards. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Forum II in the Wright Administration Building, and the Chemistry Bowl will start at 9 a.m. Tours of campus chemistry facilities, chemical demonstrations, and an awards presentation will follow. Observed annually, Mole Day celebrates Avogadro's Number, 6.02 x 10^23, which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. In general, one mole of any substance contains 6.02 x 10^23 molecules or atoms of that substance. The national observance of Mole Day began as a way to foster interest and enthusiasm in chemistry.
