International panel will answer questions about “Global Financial Panic”
|
Between Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6, the Dow Jones fluctuated more than 1,300 points, closing below 10,000 for the first time in four years. Since then it has dipped below 8,000 and the U.S. government has pledged a $700 billion rescue package. World markets have mirrored the U.S. markets. How has this crisis spread from the U.S. to the rest of the world? Are we in a global recession? How will we be affected in Evansville? How is this crisis different from the Great Depression? To what extent have recent policies of deregulation caused the crisis or is it a cyclical, periodic crisis of a market system? Is it over yet? How long will it last? Faculty from the departments of Economics, Finance, Political Science, and Sociology will answer your questions at 7 p.m. Monday, November 3, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. USI’s international panel of experts includes: Dr. Mohammed Khayum, dean of the College of Business; Dr. Brian Posler, assistant provost and associate professor of political science; Dr. Khaled Elkhal, assistant professor of finance; Dr. Jong C. Rhim, professor of finance; Dr. Daria Sevastianova, assistant professor of economics; Dr. Sudesh Mujumdar, associate professor of economics; and Dr. Niharika Banerjea, assistant professor of sociology. Dr. Oana Armeanu, assistant professor of political science, will moderate. Patricia Aakhus, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, said, “Everyone has questions about what’s going on and it’s very frightening. We may not be able to forecast the future, but we can hear what the experts have to say about this global issue.” Sponsored by International Studies and the Political Science Society, the event is free and open to the public.
