USI’s “Boxville” to raise awareness about homelessness
|
USI’s construction boom continues on Monday, November 10, with “Boxville,” a homelessness awareness event in which teams of USI students will “build” box homes – with cardboard and duct tape – near the new Residence Life Community Center. Teams from USI organizations and groups will begin building the box homes at 9 p.m. in the parking lot west of the Residence Life Community Center on Mahrenholz Road. The box homes must be completed by midnight. The teams also will earn points based on contributions to a canned food drive in conjunction with the event. At 11 p.m., a speaker will discuss homelessness in America. Later, the box homes will be judged in a variety of themes and categories based on effort and creativity. Some of the awards include the “Clown Car Award” for the team that fits the most people into the smallest box home; “Skyscraper Award” for the tallest box home; “Pimp My Shanty Award” for the most accessorized box home, and the “Mirror Image Award” for the box home that most resembles another structure. The event will end at 3 a.m. For more information about Boxville go to www.usi.edu/res/mcwest/boxville.asp or contact Kourtney Eastham, area coordinator for McDonald West Apartments, at kbeastham@usi.edu or 812/468-2051.
